Above All, Your Personal Wellness

February 2023
EDITION #9

In a dynamic world of processed foods, pollution and stress, it is essential that we take care of our physical and mental well-being.

At the dawn of each new year, many of us set personal goals and make promises to improve our well-being. Whether by starting a new exercise routine, prioritizing self-care, or pursuing a new hobby, sticking to your promises and achieving these goals is a challenging affair. It is relatively easy to get caught up in the day-to-day grind of work and forget about taking care of your health. However, prioritizing personal wellbeing is essential for success, both in your personal and professional life.

If the guidelines are followed meticulously, you will realise that constructing a personal wellness plan is a straightforward task. Staying motivated and following through with the plan may seem a little more difficult. However, if you have set your willpower on a steadfast track to meet the ultimate goal, then the guidelines and tips, which are readily available, will be easy to follow. On this journey, it is important to remember that small changes add up to big results. Patience and kindness towards yourself are key components to enjoying a healthy and productive life. When setting your goals, they should be specific, measurable and time bound, starting small and building on them gradually. Once those have been set, the next thing will be to draw up a plan surrounding how they will be achieved, not forgetting to include time for sports and recreation.

Revitalizing your mind, body and soul as well as building healthy habits that support your overall well-being are vital and can be achieved through meditation, yoga, or spending time in nature. If you wish to lead a healthy and improved life, then yoga is certainly an avenue to look into. It is not only a form of exercise, but when practised, it leads to holistic wellness, a life therapy that is essential in today's world, especially when dealing with the challenges of this fast-paced life. Yoga doesn't only teach one discipline and patience; it builds self-esteem and is an alternative to medication. A guided set of stretches will release the toxins harming your mind, body and soul. With its emphasis on breathing techniques and meditation that help calm and centre the mind, it's not surprising that yoga reduces anxiety and depression, both of which are prevalent in South African communities.

This may surprise you: Yoga actually makes your brain work better.

Through yoga training, your brain cells develop new connections, causing changes to occur in the brain's structure and functions. The results will be evident by the improvement in your cognitive skills. Yoga training strengthens parts of the brain that plays a key role in your memory and attention, awareness, thought patterns, and language ability. Yogis refer to this as bicep curls for the brain.

Finally, regardless of the sport, meditation method, or outdoor activity you choose, it is crucial to recognise that setbacks are a natural part of the process. If you experience a slip-up, don't beat yourself up about it, instead, use it as an opportunity to learn and adjust your plan as needed. Remember at all times that the power lies within you, and you are responsible for shaping your own wellness journey. Your plan is a reflection of your values, strengths and aspirations, so, follow it with passion and dedication, and you will reap the rewards of a more vibrant and fulfilling lifestyle.
