A conversation with Tumi Sedupane reveals a fascinating and hardworking person, with a big heart and a strong desire for creating job opportunities for the youth and giving back to his community. He is the founder of Sedupane Technology Services which specialises in installations, repairs and maintenance of Power Generators. Tumi lights up when he discusses how he started his business. “Barloworld Siyakhula has made me who I am today”. He says he looks forward to further participation in the Siyakhula programme and the support available to grow his Company. Always driven, Tumi started soon after completing Grade 12 in 2005. He worked at the retailer, Mr Price, and saved his earnings over 18 months to attend college and study Electrical Engineering. Soon came the opportunity to kick-off his career through a learnership at Engine Applications in 2008. It enabled him to complete a National Diploma in 2012 and went to join Barloworld Power in 2015 as a NO CHALLENGE IS TOO GREAT FOR SEDUPANE TECHNOLOGY SERVICES Preventative Maintenance Technician. He continued with his learning at Barloworld and acquired certification as a Perkins Technician after completing the DeepSea Controller training.

Tumi viewed his retrenchment from Barloworld in September 2020 as a welcomed opportunity to establish his own company and begin a new growth path. He explains that for him, pressure is his greatest motivator that pushes him to work harder. It has enabled him to make rapid progress with his new company for which he also credits the love and firm support of his family. Tumi believes that to achieve both personal and business growth, it is critical to also have mentors who can provide guidance. For this he looks to his former colleagues, Erick Nkgadima and Happy Tseisi. They are also Technicians and were his seniors while at Barloworld. He remains in regular contact with them and appreciative for the fact that they are always ready to give him an ear. Tumi has already secured a new corporate client in addition to the contract he has with Barloworld Power, but, typically, he is not resting on this achievement.

Tumi has put his focus on learning new skills, one being, in sales and marketing. He has a clear vision for his company and has set himself a five-year goal of establishing a training centre for Electrical and Mechanical Engineering with its own workshop. But that’s just one of the many items on Tumi’s vision board, which he has no doubt that he will one day achieve.
