To deliver a fit-for-purpose ESD programme, we are making strategic choices in: procurement spend, funding model, process efficiency, functional structure and governance.

Siyakhula’s aspiration is to deliver an ESD programme that is measurable and creates value beyond compliance, supported by an operating model that seeks to enhance the elements outlined below:

Beneficiary spending will be improved by implementing the following programs:

  • Bigger, bolder programmes to create black industrialists with partners
  • Developing a beneficiary pipeline that is aligned to commodities that present maximum opportunity for preferential procurement

Fund sustainability and impact will be enhanced by implementing the following programs:

  • Adjusting funding instruments towards an optimal mix of grants and loans
  • Partnering for co-funding of common initiatives in communities where we operate
  • Leveraging BUs to provide early payment terms and discounts to ESD beneficiaries

Process efficiency will be enhanced through implementing the following programs:

  • Introduction of annual planning and quarterly reviews to ensure focus on prioritised areas
  • The use of technology to integrate internal and external data source to enhance reporting
  • Implementation of tailored beneficiary support programmes with a clear developmental path from ED to SD

Functional structure optimisation will be achieved through the following programs:

  • Capacity building to enable Siyakhula to work closely and in partnership with group ESD
  • Establishment and mobilisation of an internal working group that will help facilitate execution of the programme across the group

Governance will be strengthened by adopting the principles:

  • A three-tiered approach for improved decision-making, consisting of a Board, Invesco and the Siyakhula team
  • A cross-functional representation of both the group and divisions for effective ESD programme execution
