When confronted with the harsh realities of today's business environment, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) face difficulties in developing long-term survival strategies. A solution however does exist: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. These principles are an ever-changing concept that business owners should adopt as positive forces to propel them to a point of sustainability, which is the ability to maintain or support a process over time. The perception that ESG is a destination has been the downfall of many SMEs. ESG principles are rather, a compass or guideline to achieving sustainability. Due to SMEs contributing significantly to the global workforce and economic growth, incorporating ESG principles should become second nature to them, but sadly, it is not. Even though ESG reporting may initially appear to harm company performance, transparency will ultimately increase corporate investment in SMEs, resulting in long-term benefits.
